Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
This book is the first in Uglies series.
"Tally can't wait to turn sixteen and become Pretty. Sixteen is the magic number that brings a transformation from a repellent Ugly into a stunningly attractive Pretty, and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks, Tally will be there. But Tally's new friend, Shay, isn't sure she wants to be Pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the Pretty world - and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worse choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn Pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever."

How did I come across the book?
A friend suggested it to me.
What did I think?
Reading the synopsis it seems this book would be perfect for me romance? Tick. Adventure? Tick. Dystopian world? Tick. AND a strong rebelling protagonist? Tick.
However (yes there just had to be a however) I felt that although the narrative was well structured the characters, as they so often do with the books I read at the moment, lacked depth. Tally, for example, is supposed to be a shallow girl but it was her relationship with David I disliked as it seemed to blossom all too fast for me to believe and empathise with it.
Overall though the plot was interesting and slightly unique, the setting of the book was also quite intriguing.
Characters: 2/5
Narrative: 3/5
Literature: 4/5
Overall: 3/5
